Evaluation of the Resilient Elastic Characteristics of Asphalt Mixtures Using the Indirect Tensile Test
This report reviews the basic elastic materials properties required as inputs in elastic layer structural analyses and possible test methods for obtaining these elastic properties. The proposed test method for estimating the repeated-load elastic properties, i.e., the resilient modulus of elasticity and Poisson's ratio, is the repeated-load indirect tensile test. Techniques for obtaining these properties for asphalt mixtures are evaluated and a preliminary repeated-load indirect tensile test method is proposed. Relationships between various engineering properties and optimum asphalt contents are evaluated in terms of their application to mixture design. This evaluation indicates that the optimum asphalt contents for various mixture properties are different, and it is recommended that this fact be recognized and considered during the design of the mixture.
