Nonlinear Analysis of Planar Reinforced Concrete Structures
The behavior of thick walled multiple opening reinforced concrete conduits, such as may be used under high earth dams, was investigated using the finite element technique. Nonlinear material properties were taken into account, including the effects of progressive tension cracking of the concrete, yielding of the concrete in compression, and of the reinforcement. Slip between the concrete and steel was also taken into account. The loads were assumed to be applied incrementally, and the structural stiffness matrix was modified periodically to take the material nonlinearities into account. At each load increment, the unbalanced forces due to material nonlinearities were computed and iterations were performed until equilibrium was attained. (Modified author abstract)
