End-Bolted Cover Plates, Task B: Fatigue Strength of Retrofitted Cover Plate Ends
A total of 32 cover plate ends were spliced with a high-strength bolted friction-type connection when the tension flange was noncracked, or after it had been half precracked or fully precracked. The first condition applies to upgrading rolled beams with cover plates for increased truck weight and traffic volume. The others apply to retrofitting cover plate ends that exhibited fatigue cracking. All splices were designed to resist the flange's portion of the moment in the beam. Under subsequent stress cycling, the mean fatigue life of the noncracked details exceeded the Category B mean and was a factor of 18.2 larger than the Category E mean. The difference in the fatigue lives of the half precracked and fully pre-cracked details was statistically insignificant. Their combined mean life fell short of the Category B mean, but it was a factor of 12.9 longer than the Category E mean.
