Behavior of Embankments on New Liskeard Varved Clay
The performance, including a failure, of two embankments in New Liskeard, Canada is analysed. The underlying 150 ft of medium to soft varved clay is studied with respect to stability, undrained deformations, pore pressure distribution and consolidation settlements. The presence of cementing bonds in the New Liskeard varved clay limits extrapolation of properties from other varved clay to this site, although some test data from the Northampton, Massachusetts, varved clay were used to help provide a better picture of the anisotropy of this clay.
