Static and Dynamic Laboratory Tests of Unreinforced Concrete Fixed-End Arches Buried in Dry Sand
A study was made to determine the response of semicircular, unreinforced concrete, fixed-end arches of different stiffness buried in dense, dry sand when subjected to both static and dynamic loads. Two sets of three arches all having outside diameters of 12 inches were cast with one arch in each set having wall thicknesses of 1/2, 1, and 2 inches. The maximum static ground-surface overpressure applied was 550 psi, and the maximum dynamic overpressure was 270 psi. For most of the tests, the depth of sand over the crown of the arch was 2 inches. The modes of response for the structures tested statically and dynamically were the same. However, only the 1/2-inch arch loaded statically collapsed. From strain measurements it was determined that the arches responded in compression. From the results, an equation, including the effects of soil arching, for predicting overpressures to cause failure of the type arches described in this report was developed. (Author)
