Settlement and Stability of Earth Embankments on Soft Foundations
This volume contains the four papers presented at a symposium, together with summaries of the discussions which they stimulated. The first paper described the improved predictions of the rate of settlement of embankments which can be achieved by the latest calculation procedures; this was followed by an account of the techniques now available for controlling construction to avoid instability. The third paper was concerned with the application of methods of classical plasticity for assessing soil behavior, and showed the greater insight which this approach can give when used in analyzing the results of a full scale embankment experiment. The final paper described the use of centrifuge modelling to provide engineers with a powerful technique for design purposes.
