The report is a history of old Salem Church, a mid-nineteenth century brick structure in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. The church, identified with the Salem Church Fight, which was one of the more significant actions of the Chancellorsville campaign of May 2 - 4, 1863, is a significant example of period rural church architecture. It is representative of many of the structures built around that time by the Baptists throughout this part of Virginia. Such structures indicate the rising economic status of the Baptists, who for all that could not be grouped with persons of great wealth. Salem Church is a well-preserved example of this type of structure and reflects a facet of nineteenth century social life. It is to be considered of especial significant as it is a basically unaltered example of its class and time. (Author)
