Development of Wood Bridges: Prospects of Wood in Various Types of Bridges
Economics and aesthetics of various types of wood bridges are considered. The main emphasis is focused on light traffic bridges, but some road bridges are examined, as well. Basic assumptions are specified concerning loading, material properties, allowable deflection and vibration. The following types of bridges are studied: girder bridges, arch bridges, cable-stayed bridges, truss bridges and so-called box-type truss bridges. Sketches and required wood quantities for different span lengths are presented for each bridge type. Approximate dimensions of wooden components are given based on preliminary static calculations. Estimated construction costs of light traffic bridges are also mutually compared. Some suggestions for more innovative types of bridges are presented without calculating required dimensions of the load-carrying members. Finally, some conclusions are made for the development of wood bridges in future.
