Neutron Activation of Portland Cements
A study was made of the neutron activation properties of Portland cements according to their manganese and sodium contents (as the chief activating constituents of cements in the time frame of interest). The purpose was to select a low activating cement to be used in the construction of an exposure room capable of housing a high intensity 14 MeV neutron source. Relatively low activating limestone was chosen for the fine and coarse aggregates of the concrete. Five hundred samples of cement were analyzed employing thermal neutron activation analysis techniques, and the results are presented in several tables showing the geographical origin of the samples, mill and type, plus sample distribution as a function of sodium and manganese concentration.
