Physical Model of Current-Induced Scour at Ventura Harbor

This paper describes a 1:25-scale movable-bed physical model study of scour resulting from longshore current passing through a narrow gap on the leeside of the detached breakwater at Ventura Harbor, California, USA. The physical model was calibrated by adjusting the total flow discharge to achieve equilibrium scour development that matched the scour hole measured at Ventura Harbor. The calibrated model was then used to predict future scour potential and to optimize the design for remedial toe protection intended to prevent leeside armor layer damage on the detached breakwater. In addition, the model study identified and eliminated several construction problems that could have caused significant unforeseen expenditures.
