Ruts and Undulations in the Road Surface (Rijsporen en Golven in het Wegdek)
The relationship between surface damage (the presence of ruts and undulations) and traffic safety is discussed. An analysis of the problem has shown that no unsuspected changes may occur in the characteristics of a highway and of the road surface for a controlled and safe traffic. The presence of ruts in combination with water on the road surface can easily lead to aquaplaning. Presence of undulations can lead to reduced contact between tire and pavement. For wet roads this situation will be even worse. In the literature very little was found on these subjects. It is possible to develop a mathematical model to determine the depth of surface water with which almost no aquaplaning can occur. The permitable depth of the ruts can be calculated. The depth must be under the current specifications of maintenance.
