Finite Element Analysis of Reinforced Embankments
A finite element analysis is developed to predict the collapse of reinforced soil embankments. The soil is modelled as an elasto-plastic material which need not necessarily obey the associated flow rule and which obeys the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. The reinforcement is considered to be perfectly flexible and sustain axial forces and is modelled by a series of equivalent nodal forces. Slip between the soil and the reinforcement can be allowed for via a Mohr-Coulomb relationship. The analysis is incremental and simulates construction by adding layers of soil and reinforcement as the analysis proceeds. A procedure is described for accurately predicting the failure height of an unreinforced slope and is shown to give good agreement with classical plasticity solutions. This procedure is then applied to predict the increase in failure height due to the presence of reinforcement. The analysis is applied to the case of reinforced earth embankments for both cohesive and frictional soils.
