A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
An analysis of urban planning identifies 'an insistent pattern of arrogant and repressive programs by many prominent, and not so prominent, planners, politicians, and corporate leaders.' The social, political, and economic impacts of urban planning are discussed in terms of advocacy planning, urban renewal, architecture, housing, pluralism, capitalism, and socialism. The history of urban planning is discussed, and specific programs and reactions to those programs are cited. The influences of industry are examined in the context of the urban - industrial complex. It is noted that planners do not intentionally make miserable lives for the poor and the disenfranchised, but that the results of their efforts 'flow from their adherence to the conventions of a repressive social structure which is biased against the people their plans are supposed to serve.' Illustrations, photographs, notes, and an index are provided.
