Design and Evaluation of a 480-Person Austere Community Fallout Shelter
The report covers the design, construction and evaluation of a prototype 480-Person Austere Dual-Purpose Community Fallout Shelter. Significant features of this shelter are: (a) Construction of the facility in phases over an extended time period; (b) dual-purpose use; and (c) maximum economy (austerity), with provision of PF = 100, in the initial construction stage of the structure. The mass thicknesses for radiation shielding were acquired by sandfill in the concrete masonry units and between the two wythes making up the cavity exterior bearing walls and on the corrugated metal deck. Problems, encountered during construction in the use of the sandfill, are described and recommended solutions presented. The use of sandfilled walls is recommended as a competitive structural system for attaining the required mass thicknesses for radiation shielding. Conclusion are that the phased design concept is feasible for a planned mass shelter construction program. (Author)
