A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
The available information on spalling (or breaking-off) of concrete from reinforced concrete sections during fires is collated and assessed. This comprises a review of fire test data and records of structural performance in real fires. The lack of information in certain areas, such as the use of limestone aggregate, the behaviour of thin sections, and the performance of continuous floors, became apparent. The appropriate use of certain measures of controlling or preventing spalling were examined. Recommendations are made on further testing, which may lead to a rationalization of current Code requirements for the fire resistance of concrete structures. (Copyright (c) CIRIA 1984.)
