Feasibility of Inland Disposal of Dewatered Dredged Material: a Literature Review
This report presents the results from an investigation of the feasibility of inland disposal of dewatered dredged material. The engineering, economic, social, and institutional factors associated with this method are identified and summarized in the report. The study is basically a thorough literature review of municipal and industrial solid waste management practices supplemented with specific information on dredged material. The primary findings are that inland disposal of dredged material is feasible and that the sites can be designed and operated in a manner which is environmentally sound and socially compatible. However, minor operational problems may be encountered which can only be identified following some field testing of the criteria. Also, there is as yet insufficient data available concerning the quality and quantity of leachate expected from land-deposited dredged material to enable an accurate engineering design of control systems.
