Inelastic Dynamic Design of Steel Frames to Resist Seismic Loads
The reliability of an inelastic design procedure based upon elastic modal analysis, using an inelastic response spectrum proposed by Newmark and Hall, is investigated. This was accomplished by computing the inelastic response in terms of local member ductilities, of three st eel moment-resisting frames, to simulated earthquake motions derived from the design response spectrum. The effects of P-delta forces, earthquake motion details, assumed damping level, and earthquake intensity were examined. The results indicate that the unmodified inelastic seismic design procedure is unconservative, probably because modal responses cannot be combined according to SRSS to compute the total inelastic response, although it is felt that there is a great deal of promise in the use of inelastic spectra in the seismic design of structures.
