The paper reviews the Smoke Density Chamber Test Method and illustrates its use and application to assess smoke generation of building materials in fire situations. It shows how test results may aid the Fire Services and code authorities in evaluating and reducing the potential light-obscuration hazard of smoke in buildings. An example is given for calculating visibility in a simplified fire situation involving material of known smoke generation. The smoke generation of some common interior finish and construction materials are given. (Author)
