The objective of the work reported herein was to investigate the effect of temperature on the elastic and viscoelastic properties of charcoal granite and Dresser basalt under uniaxial tension and compressions. Also, the effect of the difference in tensile and compressive properties on the stress analysis, in general, and on the stress and strain distribution of a beam under bending and a disk under diametral compression, in particular, were analyzed. Both the experimental and theoretical analyses obtained in this study will add to the understanding of the time-dependent properties of rocks and the effect of these time-dependent properties of rocks to the stability of underground structures, particularly under a severely high temperature environment.
