High-Strain-Rate Behavior of Hydrated Cement Paste
Concrete paste and mortar were studied at intermediate to high strain-rates and peak pressures up to 150 kbar,to determine how the microstructure responded to dynamic loading. Intermediate response was primarily brittle failure,while high strain-rate (shock) loads induced micro cracking, particle size reduction, lattice distortion and alteration and/or elimination of porosity. Effects were isolated by comparing explosively-loaded specimens with unshocked reference materials, using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and mercury porosimetry.
