Measuring Bridge Vibration for Detection of Structural Damage
The work described in this report was aimed at investigating the feasibility of measuring vibration for bridge inspection and evaluation. Sensitivity of measured modal parameters to damage was a major focus. The approach was applying modal-testing techniques using commercially available modal-testing instrumentation and latest analysis techniques on a scaled-model steel bridge and a full-scale (abandoned) steel bridge for diagnosis of simulated fatigue damage. The impact test method was used because its reliability is widely accepted. Statistical analyses were performed using the obtained modal parameters for damage diagnosis, testing for the hypothesis of whether the parameters have been changed. This simulated practical application of modal testing to bridge inspection.
