Verticale Drainage (Vertical Drainage)
The report covers vertical draining systems which serve to accelerate consolidation. Thereby the vertical drainage system serves a dual purpose of accelerating the primary settlement process and increasing stability during and directly after raising. The report has been set out as an integral review of the overall difficulties encountered, to be used by project managers, designers, specification writers, contractors and drain manufacturers. In a general introduction a description is given of the consolidation process and the function of vertical drains in this, as well as an review of the various areas where similar applications may be encountered. After this the various types of drains are examined, regarding their surface design as well as their method of installation. Hereby a clear distinction is made between the traditional style sand drain on the one hand and the various types of synthetic drain on the other. With regard to the design criteria and the methods of calculation are covered. Further to this the report contains certain recommendations about these topics with the aim of achieving a high quality design.
