Corrosion Inhibiting Properties of Portland and Portland Pozzolan Cement Concretes
Data are presented which indicate the relative influence of cement content, cement type, and curing method on the corrosion inhibiting properties of concrete. Within the framework of studying corrosion protective properties of concrete with admixtures and additives, concretes with various amounts of flyash were tested and evaluated. Cylindrical specimens with a centrally located reinforcing bar were exposed in a 5 percent NaCl solution after various curing periods and curing procedures. An impressed current test method was used to accelerate the corrosion process. Time to cracking and the current flow were measured and total energy requirements to induce failure calculated. Other variables studied included sorption, resistivity, strength, consistency and time to visual cracking failure of the specimens. Test results indicated that flyash pozzolanic material as an additive or an admixture improves the property of the concrete to prevent corrosion of the imbedded reinforcing steel.
