Regional Morphology Analysis Package (RMAP): Empirical Orthogonal Function Analysis, Background and Examples
This System-Wide Water Resources Program (SWWRP) technical note describes software for analyzing beach profile and shoreline position data by means of Empirical Orthogonal Functions (EOFs) Patterns obtained through EOF analysis can often be related to the physical processes shaping the beach morphology and extend understanding of how the morphology responds to changes in the forcing (e.g. wave and water level conditions) or to anthropogenic activities (e.g., beach nourishment, coastal structures). EOF analysis capability was added to the Regional Morphology Analysis Package (RMAP). After review of the theory and literature, the EOF method is applied to three examples that encompass (1) beach profiles measured through time at a specific location, (2) beach profiles surveyed at various alongshore locations at a specific time, and (3) shorelines measured at different times.
