Transparent Lightweight Armor
Preliminary evaluation of a means of reinforcing glass by high strength sapphire whiskers is reported. Glass having an index of refraction closely matching that of sapphire was hot pressed to incorporate whiskers. Sapphire whiskers were observed to increase the hardness of the composite and restrict the propagation of cracks. No serious loss in transparency was noted. (Author)
