A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Hydraulic Bursting and Hydromechanical Fracture of Concrete and Rock
A study was undertaken to determine the environmental acceptability of using demolition and excavation tools employing hydraulic bursting and hydromechanical fracture methods in urban areas. Three configurations of hydromechanical fracture systems were developed and tests were conducted in concrete. Two of the research devices were field tested in quarries to obtain research data on performance in excavating serpentinite, dolomitic limestone, and diabase rocks. The Terra-Frak I system was found to be effective, safe, and environmentally suitable for use in urban areas. The research resulted in the invention and demonstration of two new types of mechanical rock breaking devices.
