Bituminous Pavement Rehabilitation Design
To date there has not been a generally accepted approach to bituminous pavement rehabilitation design in South Africa. The need for such an approach has now become acute as the country's road network ages and the number of rehabilitation projects increases. TRH12 has been prepared to meet this need. Aspects covered in this document include the initial assessment, detailed assessments, rehabilitation design and economic analysis. The primary function of the initial assessment is to pinpoint the amount of further detailed assessment needed. The aim of the detailed assessment is to obtain sufficient knowledge about the length of pavement in need of rehabilitation to enable a confident decision to be taken on the strategy to be followed. A pavement rehabilitation measure is then designed by identifying applicable solutions and considering their merits. Finally, the alternative designs are compared on an economic basis, taking into account the cost of the measure, maintenance during the rehabilitation design period, the salvage value at the end of this period, and the real discount rate.
