Lime Shaft and Lime-Tilled Stabilization of Subgrades on Colorado Highways
The addition of small amounts of lime to improve the stability of asphaltic Plant Mixes and Base Courses has been common practice in Colorado since 1959. The attempt to stabilize subgrade material began in 1964. Subgrades on five projects have now been treated with lime shafts, and subgrades on four projects have been treated by scarifying hydrated lime into the surface. All of the projects have been observed with more than a casual degree of interest to note the condition under which the treatment was made, the cost, and the performance. (Author)
