The building in which William Howard Taft was born in 1857 and spent his formative years is the prime resource at William Howard Taft National Historic Site. Because of the many changes it has gone through over the years, the building presented a tremendous problem to the historical architect. The primary problems or questions are a direct consequence of the extensive modification of the building after the fire of 1877 and extending through the restoration of 1964.
