Air Infiltration in Low-Rise Residential Buildings: Guideline Manual
This guidebook is designed to help homebuilders better understand air infiltration and its influence on indoor air quality and energy use. It contains guidelines and suggestions for ways of providing a healthful indoor environment while improving comfort and energy efficiency. The specific design, construction, and operations techniques are applicable to both new and existing woodframe single - family housing and can be generalized for all buildings where the structural and environmental conditions are similar to those in a woodframe house. Specifically, the document addresses air quality and energy effects of infiltration, moisture control, and the optimum air exchange rate. Both measurement and prediction techniques are presented, as are procedures for evaluating a house and reducing its infiltration effects. Design construction pointers concern infiltration barriers and details for exterior walls, ceilings, foundations and floors, and mechanical ventilation systems. Extensive diagrams and 13 references are given.
