Influence Diagrams for Stresses and Displacements in a Two-Layer Pavement System for Airfields. Part I
Part I presents Influence Diagrams for Stresses and Deflections in Two-Layer Pavement Systems for Airfields, which are intended to provide the essential background and bases for understanding the character and effectiveness of layered system reinforcing action. Influence diagrams of vertical stresses and shear stresses at intervals of depth in layered systems and deflections at the surface are presented covering suitable ranges of the basic two-layer system parameters. The significance of these influence diagrams are discussed with regard to the character and effectiveness of two layer system reinforcing and to their interacting influences on pavement system performances under wheel loads. The major objectives are to develop a 'feeling', intuition, and judgment regarding the nature of vertical stress, shear stress, deflection, and shear deformation phenomena and performances, as essential bases for developing relationships and criteria for design of multilayer pavement systems.
