Correlation of KDOT and SHRP's Washington Hydraulic Fracture Index (WHFI) Aggregate Durability Test Methods
In the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP), a test method, apparently capable of identifying nondurable aggregates in approximately eight (8) days, was developed. The basic assumption in this method is that the hydraulic pressures expected in concrete aggregates during freezing and thawing to high negative pressures (vacuum). Thirty two limestone aggregates, with different degrees of freeze-thaw durability and sampled by KDOT, were tested according to the WHFI test procedure to establish the correlation between the results of the proposed WHFI tests and the outputs of KDOT test methods. The correlation analysis shows that the WHFI test results are highly correlated with the results of the modified KDOT Freeze-Thaw tests on unconfined aggregates.
