Demonstration-Hydraulic Backfilling of Mine Voids, Scranton, Pennsylvania
The Bureau of Mines proposes to conduct a demonstration project to test the economic feasibility of the Dowell in the city of Rock Springs, Wyoming, hydraulic slurry injection process for blind backfill of dry and flooded underground mine voids in order to stabilize remaining coal pillars and roof rock thereby preventing surface subsidence. If successfully completed, the project will backfill mine voids in the Clark and New County coalbeds beneath a 20 acre section of the Green Ridge residential area of Scranton, Pennsylvania. Some noise, dust, water spills, partial blockage of streets necessitating rerouting of traffic, and public safety hazards will be associated with drilling, trenching, casing, and paving operations.
