A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
An analysis is made of housing subsidy systems in West European countries during the postwar period, with special emphasis on shifts in national housing policy and on innovational ideas. Contemporary major national policy shifts include a trend toward a relative reduction in Governments' direct involvement in housing production, ownership and management; a promotion of home ownership through flexible mortgage terms and special housing savings plans; a shift from almost exclusive reliance on production-priented subsidy systems to a more balanced approach including consumer-oriented subsidies (i.e. mainly housing allowances); and a decline in the importance of income-tax concessions for promoting house construction.
