Fort Myer, Virginia: Historic Landscape Inventory
Fort Myer, Virginia, holds a central place in the history of the Army. Part of the fort is designated as a Historic District under the National Register of Historic Places. The goal of this research was to develop a statement of the historic context for Fort Myer, based on military missions, activities, historical associations, and periods of development. By integrating literature reviews, archival reviews, and site visits, the statement identifies the most important historical areas and landscape characteristics within the installation. It can be used: (1) to help guide future adjustments of the Historic District boundary to include previously overlooked significant landscapes or to exclude areas lacking significance and/or integrity, and (2) to provide guidance for the development of a historic landscape management plan.
