Unexpected Surface Cracking of Asphaltic Wearing Courses
The premature cracking of asphalt surfacings is causing increasing concern to road authorities in South Africa. The paper reports on an extensive study of this phenomenon, undertaken by the Transvaal Roads Department, Bruinette Kruger Stoffberg Incorporated and the National Institute for Transport and Road Research. The main factors contributing to this distress are identified and are associated with temperature sensitive mixes, ageing on the surface and construction techniques.
