A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Parametric studies are carried out to develop quantitative information with respect to the strength and behavior of reinforced and prestressed concrete beams and beam-columns as affected by the use of high strength concrete along with high strength reinforcement. The concrete strength is varied from 5 ksi to 25 ksi, and three levels of steel stress (80 ksi, 100 ksi, 120 ksi) are used. For prestressed concrete members, only the 270K Grade prestressing strand is considered. Special emphasis is placed upon the current design criteria in order to identify the possible limitations of these criteria which could prevent the effective use of high strength concrete. The results indicate that modifications are necessary for a number of the current design criteria including the ultimate concrete strain, the minimum flexural reinforcement, the maximum permissible steel ratio, and the deflection criteria.
