Effect of Water Pressure on Structures: Water Absorption, Static Strength and Strain Development Tests
The effect of water pressure on submerged concrete is of importance in the design of offshore structures. Test results concerning the water absorption ability of concrete, the static compressive strength of concrete exposed to water pressure and the strain development of concrete exposed to an external water pressure during a long period of time, are presented in the report. Methods and estimates to determine the water absorption ability of different concrete qualities exposed to water, are presented. It is documented that the water pressure influences the static compressive strength only in the terms of multiaxial stress condition. Reduced prestressing effect from the outer water pressure as water penetrates the concrete and pore pressure is being built up, is also documented.
