Behavior and Performance of Flexible Pavements Evaluated in the University of Illinois Pavement Test Track
Four sets of flexible pavement sections were subjected to 3,200 lb. wheel loads (70 psi) in a 26-foot diameter circular test track. Pavement deflection, roughness, material characteristics and deformation of the component layers were measured. Test results are quite variable and data is inconclusive. The researchers believe that the variability in performance is due to either the absence or presence of water in the granular layers. Testing in the presence of water is severe, with water to half the depth of the base course. (BPR abstract)
