In the report, a proposal for a test procedure is presented which enables a better and safer choice of extinguishing media for liquified chemical fires. The results that can be obtained are the rate of burning and the flame radiation for the chemical, and extinguishing effectiveness of different types of extinguishing foams, dry powders, and gases. The method is based on the NORDTEST-methods for foams, NT FIRE 023, and portable fire extinguishers, NT FIRE 024, respectively. In this project a test series has been carried out with heptane and two different chemicals: xylene and methyltertier-buthylether (MTBE). The tests performed and a literature survey show that different types of guides for hazardous materials are insufficient and in some cases erroneous. Test results show that MTBE is more difficult to extinguish than heptane and xylene; no film forming effect was achieved on MTBE.
