Field Tests and Analyses of Concrete Pavements in Texarkana and La Porte, Texas
This report summarizes the research results obtained from two field tests for Portland cement concrete pavements. One field test was carried out on test sections of jointed plain concrete pavement in Texarkana, Texas, and the other was carried out on test sections of continuously reinforced concrete pavement in La Porte, Texas. Laboratory tests and theoretical analysis were also performed to help in understanding and analyzing the field observation. A close-form solution is proposed for thermal stresses in a concrete slab when it is curled up. This solution is for the case where the temperature decreases in the concrete slab exceeds a limit so that a gap between the slab and foundation forms. This case was not addressed in the Westgaard solution. Fracture tests were applied to the concrete made with different coarse aggregates used for Texas pavements and have shown that fracture mechanics is a powerful tool to judge the quality of the pavement. With these efforts, a method based on fracture mechanics is proposed to determine the depth and spacing of the jointed plain concrete pavement. This method has successfully been applied to the test in Texarkana.
