Exposure Tests on Externally Reinforced Concrete Beams - First Two Years
Concrete bridges are sometimes understrength due to design errors or requirements to increase load carrying capacity. External epoxy-bonded steel reinforcement has been used to achieve the required increase in performance. The stiffness of the structure is increased and its susceptibility to cracking is reduced, thus improving its serviceability. Laboratory tests have confirmed the effectiveness of bonded steel plates on reinforced concrete beams of 4.9m length. The long term durability of the bond between the steel and the concrete is of prime importance. British highway bridges have design lives of 120 years, and any strengthening scheme should last for a comparable period. The Report describes tests on small scale composite beams which were exposed to natural weathering and gives results for the first 2 years. Comparisons are made with beams which have been kept in a controlled laboratory environment over the same period. Further beams are to be tested after 5 and 10 years of exposure.
