Soil Effects on Seismic Response of Chimneys
In this work the seismic response of chimneys including soil conditions is analyzed. The foundation parameters are taken into account as functions of the shear wave velocity. Seismic forces are obtained from response spectra of real tremors and the structural response is calculated with an approximate method based on classical modal analysis. Results are presented as dimensionless interaction diagrams for displacement, shear force and overturning moment. Two types of structural damping are evaluated; that due to energy dissipation into the soil and that due to the flexibility of the footing. A comparison with results obtained for chimneys assuming rigid base conditions is also presented.
