Health Hazard Evaluation Report HETA-87-222-1849, New Mexico State Highway Department, General Office Building and Annex, Santa Fe, New Mexico
A 1 year follow up test was conducted at a building which had been contaminated with polychlorinated-biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins during a transformer fire. After substantial work, the building had been declared safe for reoccupancy. The investigation was intended to determine whether significant changes had occurred since the building was reopened. Two air samples were collected in the intake vents for the building and showed no evidence of PCB contamination from the outside air. Of the 23 samples collected inside the building in the various workspaces, all the PCB concentrations were significantly below the reoccupancy criteria of 0.4microg/cu m. The author concludes that the buildings are safe for occupancy, and further environmental testing will not be necessary.
