A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
The report is concerned with the derivation of optimality conditions from extremum principles of structural theory, with special emphasis on conditions for global optimality. After a brief introduction (Sect. 1), optimal design of sandwich structures is discussed for a single behavioral constraint (Sect. 2) or multiple constraints (Sect. 3). Structural elements with solid sections are treated in Sect. 4. A three-dimensional problem that includes many problems of optimal structural design as special cases is investigated in Sect. 5. In Sect. 6, the optimality criteria discussed in the preceeding sections are presented in a unified way that frequently suggests the form of optimality conditions in new situations. (Author)
