Changes in the Properties of Ordinary Portland Cement and Their Effects on Concrete
The report contains a review of the properties of ordinary Portland cement manufactured in the United Kingdom and their changes over the years, based on available data up to 1984. Changes in standard test procedures are also reviewed. The principal changes identified in chemical and physical properties are increases in the proportion of tricalcium silicate to dicalcium silicate, strength, rate of strength development and heat of hydration. No significant change in fineness as measured by air permeability has been found. The implications of changes in cement properties on concrete mix design are considered. In particular, it is demonstrated that currently available cements can allow concretes to be produced to meet a given strength specification with lower cement contents and higher water/cement ratios than, say, 30 years ago. The possible implications of this on concrete durability and the importance of adequate curing are reviewed. Aspects of structural design are considered. Conclusions are drawn and recommendations are made. The report includes an extensive bibliography. The report deals principally with UK experience, but information from overseas is presented, which exhibits similar trends to those found in the UK. (Copyright (c) The Concrete Society, 1987.)
