Numerical Modelling of Contaminant Transport in Fractured Rock Using 'SWIFT/486'
Simulation of fluid flow and contaminant transport in fractured rock is a topic of increasing interest. Some of the basic ideas concerning transport of contaminant waste, including radionuclide waste are presented in this report. The mathematical model presented in this report is the model used in the three-dimensional finite difference program SWIFT/486 which solves the coupled equations for transport in geologic media in the saturated zone. Flow in fractured media can be modelled in three different ways; (1) an equivalent porous continuum, (2) a discrete fracture network and (3) a dual-porosity medium. All three conceptualizations may be considered in SWIFT/486.
