Use of Flexible Facing for Soil Nail Walls, Technical Summary
Soil nail wall construction is a widely used method for retaining vertical and nearly vertical cuts in soil. A significant portion of the cost of soil nail wall construction is related to the construction of a reinforced concrete face. It has been proposed that for temporary soil nail walls, the reinforced concrete face could be replaced with a face composed of a combination of geogrid or steel mesh over a geotextile. This alternative face design would require much less unsupported face stand-up time and would be significantly less expensive. Construction of a full-scale test wall was considered; however, given the nature of the problem, it was determined that it would be more appropriate to first conduct a feasibility study to evaluate the potential for success before constructing a full scale test wall. This study consisted of finite difference modeling and construction of a model section of a wall with flexible facing. This report contains the results of that study.
