A review is given of the First International Permafrost Conference which was held in the United States in November 1963. At this conference great attention was devoted to the problem of foundation construction on permafrost; the work of a special section was devoted to its discussion. The reports presented at this section and the communications and discussions give some idea concerning the status of foundation construction on permafrost in the United States and Canada. (Author)
