Enhanced Role for the Arterial Street System in Texas Cities
Urban mobility is becoming an increasingly greater concern in major Texas cities. To address this problem, a variety of actions will need to be taken. Some will be oriented at reducing the demand for transportation, others at increasing the supply of transportation services. One of the supply options involves the possibility of developing a system of regional arterial streets, or super streets. The arterial street system in Texas is underdeveloped and, as a result, too much traffic is forced onto the freeways. Upgrading the arterial street system appears to represent a feasible and cost effective approach for enhancing urban mobility. The report documents the role currently being served by arterial streets in Texas and speculates on what that role could be if the arterial system were significantly improved.
